Moss Hey Music Curriculum
“Music is life, that’s why our hearts have beats”
At Moss Hey we aim to engage and inspire children to develop a curiosity and love of music. As well as developing an appreciation for different musicians and composers.
Our philosophy of music education is based on the principle that it should be fun and engaging for all concerned. Every child is a born musician, and music plays a role in every aspect of our lives – wherever and whoever we are.
Our Music Curriculum
At Moss Hey every child from Reception to Year 6 takes part in a weekly Music lesson in line with the National Curriculum through Charanga. By utilising Charanga as our starting point and making it our own, we ensure knowledge and skills are progressive from Reception to Year 6. Charanga includes many examples of music styles and genres from different times and places. These are explored through the language of music via active listening, performing and composing activities, which enable understanding of the context and genre. In doing so children gain an understanding into different methods of creating notes, as well as how to read basic music notation. They also learn to compose focusing on different dimensions of music, which in turn feeds their understanding when playing or appraising music.
Our children will:
develop a deep understanding of how music has evolved and explore their own musical preferences
be able to confidently take part in music making, including singing, playing percussion and learning to play the Glockenspiel
learn to read music.
Have opportunities to compose and perform their own music
take part in multiple performances throughout their school life
explore other areas of the curriculum through music.
have the opportunity to listen to live music.
Peripatetic instrumental lessons
We have a full timetable of instrumental tuition, with professional visiting tutors from Stockport Music Service teaching here in school.
We currently offer lessons on; keyboard, flute, violin, guitar, woodwind and brass at a reasonable cost of
Individual 20-minute lesson: £19.80
Shared 20-minute lesson: £9.90
A further benefit of learning with Stockport Music Service is the use of two schemes to help with the instruments needed. There is the opportunity to hire and instruments from the music service while having lessons this is very popular with parents until their sons/daughters have decided exactly which instrument is for them.
Many children will have completed Grade exams on their instrument by the end of Year 6. All children learning an instrument are invited to perform in a special musical assembly where they can showcase their talents each year.
Extra-curricular
