Early Years Foundation Stage- Reception 2024 - 2025

Welcome to Reception!

Class teacher: Mrs Hallworth        Teaching Assistants: Ms Green, Miss Rogers

Welcome to Reception’s page where you can find out about all the exciting things that we get up to!

In Reception, we create a stimulating environment that allows the children to become independent and resilient learners. Personal and social development is a significant part of the children’s time in Reception and during their first year of school, we strive to inspire a love of learning that will continue throughout their time at Moss Hey!

We have a different theme each half term:

Autumn 1 – All about me

Autumn 2 - Celebrations

Spring 1 – Once Upon a Time

Spring 2 - Let it Grow

Summer 1 - Hot and Cold Places

Summer 2 - Our Wonderful World

Phonics

Early reading is a significant part of the Reception year. We use Essential Letters and Sounds as our phonics scheme to support children with learning to read. I have attached a link which will direct you to the parents page.

Reading

Children need to be reading every day and reading their book more than once to gain a secure understanding. The EYFS curriculum states children need to "re-read books to build up their confidence in word reading, their fluency and their understanding and enjoyment” We will be changing all reading books on a Friday. Please write a comment in the reading record so we know you have read the book. Please leave the book and reading record in their book bags at all times as we will read with the children throughout the week.

Buddies

Each Reception child will be buddied up with a Year 6 child to support them with their transition and to develop their confidence around the school. Year 6 will have lunch with their buddy and read with them each week. There will be many opportunities throughout the year for the children to play and work with their buddies.

Mystery Reader

Parents, relatives and carers are invited to surprise the children by being a Mystery Reader in our classroom. They are asked to send in five clues about themselves, but their true identity is not revealed until they arrive at school to read to the class. Readers are asked to bring a picture book to share with the children.

Interest time

Every Monday we will have Interest Time. Children can either bring something in or send a photo to talk about to the rest of the class. The aim of the session is to seek to develop the children’s self-confidence and listening skills as well as their speech and language.

Homework

You must read with your child every single day and write a comment in the reading record. There will also be a phonics sheet sent home weekly with the sounds taught that week. Please practise the letter formation and the words and sentences in the exercise book provided.

Class Dojo

I will post regular photos on Class Dojo to show you what we have been up to during our school day. This will be our main form of communication. Please use Class Dojo to contact me with any questions and look out for class messages and photos.

myHappymind

At Moss Hey we follow myHappymind which is an NHS-backed curriculum for primary schools. It focuses on building resilience, self-esteem, and happiness in children. The lessons and activities contain quizzes, songs, animations and feature lovely characters. The children will complete five modules, Meet Your Brain, Celebrate, Appreciate, Relate and Engage. Each Year group works through the 5 modules allowing for a whole school culture to build. Within each module children learn positive habitats which they will then use all of the time. The children have journals to records ideas and feelings.

If you have any questions, please get in touch.

Many thanks for your support.
